Time to ride the phenomenon called “Jeep”
For many years, the mean machine named “Jeep” symbolizes adrenalin-pumped driving on rough terrain, adventures and passion. Jeep’s journey is a beguiling story of evolution through decades and transformation. With Jeep Compass getting launched in India, all the devotees of off-road driving are up for a fantastic ride up the memory lane.
This is the tough 4X4 Willys MB which started a revolution in the use of small military motor vehicles in the US Army. This little beast ruled between 1941 and 1945.
A decade after, in order to address the complaint of earlier CJ-version owners for more space, Willys came up with an improved CJ-6 with a longer wheelbase, improved comfort and better performance. CJ versions of Jeep ran from 1955 to 1981.
In 1962, Jeep introduced the Wagoneer, the very first 4X4 luxury segment SUV. The Wagoneer was a kingly vehicle which burnt the roads between 1963 and 1991 and was designed to mix the comfort of passenger-car with the sturdiness of four-wheel drive.
In the 1970s, came the CJ-5 RENEGADE featuring 304 cubic inch (5L), V8 engine. The vehicle wore alloy wheels and a Trac-Lok limited slip real differential.
In the 1980s what we had was CHEROKEE, a compact SUV. The all new XJ series of CHEROKEE made its debut in 1984 and was awarded the “4X4 of the year’ by the best of the off-road magazines.
Moving forward, in 1999, the new grand CHEROKEE was launched as “The most capable Sports Utility Ever” and won many 4x4 award competitions. The revised WJ wore a completely revised design and featured better specs for a full-bodied driving experience.
The Wrangler Rubicon was the most capable vehicle in Jeep’s documented history. It was named after the legendary off-road trail in California and was meant for those hard-core off-road fanatics. It ran through 2003 and 2006.
